Down the TBR Hole – #1 – AKA for the first time ever!

“Down the TBR Hole” was created by Lia @ Lost in a Story as a way to reduce the number of books on your “Want to Read” Goodreads list.

Since my “Want to Read” list is now at 517 books (!!), I figured this would be a fun meme to try.

Here’s how it works:

  • Go to your Goodreads “Want to Read” shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 (or even more!) if you’re feeling adventurous) books – if you do this weekly, start where you left off the last time.
  • Read the synopsis of each of the books.
  • Think long and hard before deciding to: keep it or remove it.

*I’m only going to be including books that I do not already own – that is a whole other unhaul project!

Here are the first 10 books on my Want to Read list:

Title: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz – Goodreads synopsis
Thoughts: This sounds super cute, but it has been on my list for years and I’ve never felt inclined to buy it.
Verdict: Remove it!

Title: The Jewel by Amy Ewing – Goodreads synopsis
Thoughts: I’ll admit, this is on my list because I love the cover! The synopsis does sound like it would be right up my alley, but it also sounds like many books I’ve already read.
Verdict: Remove it!

Two for two! This is going well so far…

Title: Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch – Goodreads synopsis
Thoughts: This one sounds so good and I’m honestly surprised I haven’t picked it up yet. Plus, it’s set in Italy, and I adore Italy!
Verdict: Keep it!

Title: The Geek’s Guide to Unrequited Love by Sarvenaz Tash – Goodreads synopsis
Thoughts: Another one that sounds super cute, but that I just haven’t picked up yet. I’m kind of on the fence about it, to be honest.
Verdict: Keep it (for now).

Title: Pandemonium by Daryl Gregory – Goodreads synopsis
Thoughts: While the synopsis sounds interesting, I can’t say I actually remember adding this to my list. It’s also labelled as horror, and I do NOT do horror.
Verdict: Remove it!

Title: A Bollywood Affair by Sonali Dev – Goodreads synopsis
Thoughts: I think I added this because it is by an Indian author, but there are some reviews that point to some questionable content and I’m not sure I want to put myself through that.
Verdict: Remove it.

Title: Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan – Goodreads synopsis
Thoughts: Full disclosure, I already saw the movie! I loved the movie, but that also makes me less likely to pick up the book.
Verdict: Remove it.

Five out of seven removed! I feel like this is also clearing space mentally for me.

Title: American Gods by Neil Gaiman – Goodreads synopsis
Thoughts: I currently have two Neil Gaiman books, Neverwhere and Good Omens, but have not read either yet. The synopsis for this sounds so intriguing though!
Verdict: Keep it! At least until I read the other books and know if I like his writing style.

Title: The Tsar of Love and Techno by Anthony Marra – Goodreads synopsis
Thoughts: I added this because a friend of mine really liked it, and we usually have similar tastes. However, the only other Anthony Marra book that I’ve read, I disliked very much.
Verdict: Remove it!

Title: The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman – Goodreads synopsis
Thoughts: Another Gaiman novel! The synopsis for this one really grabs me, so I’m thinking I need to read the Gaiman books that I already have really soon to know if I like his style.
Verdict: Keep it (for now)!

There we go! Six books removed from my “Want to Read” list which is now down to 511! Not bad for my first time down the tbr hole.

I’m not sure how often I will do these, but I will definitely try for every week or two!

Did I remove any books that you think I should have kept? Or vice versa? Let me know!

  1. Aww, I really love Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (it’s surprisingly deep), but if it’s clearing your mental space, go for it. I plan on reading American Gods sometime this year btw; I’ve heard it’s really quirky and fun. 😉
